The former Sony chairman, Shawn Layden has come out and said he doesn’t think Sony will every do same-day PC launches. Unlike Xbox who release any Xbox exclusives on PC at launch, Sony has tried a different tactic for their game releases.
Earlier in 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn was released on PC. This was after three years from it’s PlayStation 4 debut. Then after that, earlier this year, Days Gone was also released on PC after two years of it’s PS4 release.
Upcoming Sony PC release is with Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: Lost Legacy which will be arriving on PC in 2022. Even though they were released nearly 5 years ago.
And although Shawn isn’t working with Sony anymore, he did say he doubts Sony will follow Xbox’s business model.
“The idea of going to PC—and I don’t think you’ll ever see PlayStation do a day and date with PC, but you know, never say never.”
A focus on console sales
It certainly seems as though Sony wants to prioritise console sales, rather than expanding their clientele. Especially when it comes to new releases. This could be for a wide variety of reason, whether it’s entirely monetary and Sony wanting to sell more consoles. Or possibly, they want their developers and PlayStation exclusive games to be made with only one console port being the focus. Allowing for a quicker release.
The current PlayStation boss, Hermen Hulst said: “I want to emphasize that PlayStation will remain the best place to play our PlayStation Studios titles at launch. But we do value PC gamers, and we’ll continue to look at the right times to launch each game.“
For the time being, it certainly looks as though Sony will continue to release their games on console-alone. With a possibly PC port years after.
