Glass is a paid photo-sharing app that aims to be everything Instagram isn’t

Instagram started as a photo-sharing app, but it has become pretty much everything but that. Even its head, Adam Mosseri, admitted that in a recent video. Enter Glass, a new subscription-based app dedicated to sharing your images and engaging with the photo community.

The guys behind Glass are Tom Watson and Stefan Borsje. In an interview with Om Malik, Tom revealed that he started early designs for the app way back in 2013. However, it was only in 2019 that he and Stefan started building it. Like many photographers, Tom migrated from Flickr to Instagram. But ever since Instagram became a mash-up of TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat, I assume he felt the need to find a new place specifically for photography. I know I’m still in search of it.

As I mentioned, Glass is a subscription-based app. But hey, there are no ads which is certainly a plus, especially when you compare it to Instagram. It costs $4.99/month or $49.99/year to be a member of Glass. Right now, there’s a special launch price of $29.99/year. If you’re not ready to commit yet, there’s a 14-day free trial. “We believe there’s a sustainable business to be built by focusing on photographers and building a community and products specifically for them,” Tom told Om.

If you want to become a member, you won’t only need to whip out your credit card – you’ll also need an invite. “If you signed up for the waiting list on our website any time over the last 18 months, you’re still on it,” the founders write. And if you haven’t, you need to download the Glass app to get your spot in line and get the invite. When you become a member, you’ll get codes to share with your friends who’d like to join.

The app is designed for professional and amateur photographers alike. Anyone is welcome… Well, if they have an iPhone at least. Glass is only available in the Apple App Store for now, but we have reached out to the founders to ask when and if it will be available for Android, too.
