Instagram now translates your Stories into more than 90 languages

Instagram Stories are a great way to be on your audience’s radar and to communicate with your followers. From now on, you’ll be able to reach much more of them even if you don’t share a common language. Instagram has enabled automatic translation in Stories, and it’s already available for all users worldwide.

I first noticed the feature this morning when I mindlessly browsed through Stories of the people I follow. I guess I wasn’t that mindless after all, since I noticed a “See Translation” notice in the top left corner. Since my Instagram is in English, I don’t see this option when a Story is in that language. But as soon there’s text in any other language, I can choose the new option and the English translation will pop up at the bottom:

Browsing the internet, I found the official announcement from Instagram, too:

Automatic translation has been a part of Instagram since 2016, but only in posts and bio. Adding the feature to Stories comes five years later, which is odd, but better late than never.

I personally find it super-handy since I follow many artists who speak and write in languages I don’t understand. I use the “See Translation” feature in posts pretty often, and I will definitely use it in Stories as well.

On the other hand, this is a welcome change for me as a creative. I write everything for my embroidery-related profile in Serbian, which isn’t exactly spoken by many people. With the translation option in Stories, I will be able to communicate my thoughts with my followers from other countries, and that makes me really happy. Sure, the translation is not exactly perfect, and sometimes there are hilarious mistakes – but hey, those mistakes can even be a conversation starter. 🙂

Do you think you’ll find the new feature useful? Let me know in the comments.
