Ingredients/Variations

STEAK Go for 1″ thick boneless cuts of steak with lots of marbling. Strip loin, New York Strip or rib eyes are all great choices and have a hearty beef flavor plus it’s tender and juicy.

POTATOES Baby potatoes are small with thin skins so there is no need to peel them. If using another type, simply cut into 1 ½” chunks. Russets or baking potatoes will need to be peeled in this recipe.

SEASONING Steak spice is all that is needed for the meat, and the potatoes have the ideal combination of fresh garlic and rosemary with salt & pepper. Butter and olive oil bring all the flavors together.

How to Make Steak & Potatoes

Simple is the name of the game—especially when it comes to cooking this classic suppertime favorite:

  1. Microwave (or boil) the potatoes (as per the recipe below) and then season.
  2. While potatoes are boiling, season & pan-fry the steak in butter. Set aside to rest.
  3. While steak is resting, add potatoes to the pan crisp them without stirring for a few mintues.
  4. Serve steak & potatoes with juices on a single platter. Top with additional butter or steak butter if desired.

Tips for Perfect Steaks

  • This recipe is for 1″ steaks. Thinner steaks will need less time while thicker steaks will need more time.
  • Steak should rest at room temperature at least 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Ovens and the type of pan can vary the cook time. Check the steaks early to ensure they do not overcook. (Use a thermometer for best results).
  • Take the steak off of the heat a few degrees before you want it to be done as it will continue to rise in temperature as it rests.
  • Let the steaks rest after cooking (while you crisp the potatoes).
  • This works best in a large cast-iron pan.

What to Serve With Steak & Potatoes

When dinner is this easy, it gives the chef time to make a fancy salad! Try this wonderful Beet & Arugula Salad or go for something that can be made ahead like an Overnight Salad (Seven Layer Salad).   • Remove steaks from the fridge at least 30 minutes before cooking.

  • Rinse potatoes and place in a bowl. Cover and microwave* for 5-7 minutes or until potatoes are tender (If you don’t have a microwave, potatoes can be boiled in salted water until tender).

  • While potatoes are cooking, dab steaks dry with a paper towel and generously season with steak spice.

  • Preheat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium high heat until it is very hot.

  • Add steaks and cook 4 minutes without disturbing. Flip steak over and cook an additional 4-7 minutes or until steaks reach desired doneness (below).

  • Remove from the skillet and place on a plate, loosely tented with foil.

  • While steaks are resting, season potatoes with rosemary, garlic, salt, & pepper.

  • Add oil, remaining butter, and potatoes to the pan. Allow potatoes to crisp on one side without moving, for about 4-5 minutes. Once crisp, remove potatoes and add to the plate with the steak.

  • This recipe is for 1″ steaks. Thinner steaks will need less time while thicker steaks will need more time. Use a thermometer to ensure steaks do not overcook.
