WePC Gaming: How we review and score games

Games criticism is complicated, as it is the only medium where art, music, and human interaction come together to provoke an emotional reaction other than (maybe) pantomime theater. To put it bluntly, video game reviews are mostly about feelings, and sometimes games that don’t run at the highest frame rate or resolution are still going to get higher scores than 8K 120FPS titles that have bored us to tears.

When you read a WePC Gaming review, you’re going to get an honest, subjective opinion of the game. All our reviewers are gamers and know the genres we’ll let them loose on inside out. After reading one of our reviews, you should know exactly how you’re going to feel about the game, too.

Codes for game reviews may be given to WePC Gaming by game developers and publishers. We may also have affiliate links and product boxes on the page. Neither of these factors will ever affect our final review scores.

If another staff member really has something to say about a game, then we’ll probably let them write a ‘Second Opinion’ piece. That won’t affect the main score either, but it will give you an alternative view on the game.

WePC Gaming Reviews

★★★★★  Classic

A ‘classic’ game is the very best of the best, set to be forever remembered fondly by gamers around the world. We’re talking about masterpieces like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. We promise games that aren’t The Legend of Zelda can get into this ranking too. Really. Want an example? Okay. Disco Elysium. There, we did it.

None of these games are perfect, but if we give a game five stars then it’s as close as you’re going to get.

‘Recommended’ games are memorable and fun, and we think you should play them. We may have some complaints, but they still sit above most of the competition. These ones are often the highlights of the year, as genuine classics are few and far between.

Examples:

  • Tales of Arise
  • Lost Judgment
  • The Witcher 3

★★★☆☆  Worthwhile

‘Worthwhile’ games are worth playing, but you’ll probably need more explanation from us when it comes to why. Maybe they’re a bit grindy or repetitive or just aren’t that ambitious. They’re by no means bad, and we were largely happy when we played them, despite whatever issues they may have had.

Examples:

  • Sonic Colors Ultimate
  • Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania
  • Back 4 Blood

★★☆☆☆  Underwhelming

‘Underwhelming’ games just don’t make the cut. They’re lacking in polish or otherwise poorly executed, and we came away from them just not feeling moved or impressed. You might want to wait to pick these games up during a sale, or even give them a miss completely.

★☆☆☆☆  Awful

If we score a game this low, then you should avoid it. There won’t be any fun to be had at all here. ‘Awful’ games that get this score aren’t worth anyone’s time, or their hard-earned money.
