The Ascent is a cyberpunk action roleplaying game developed by Swedish developer Neon Giant that’s a bit like a Diablo game with big sci-fi guns. The dystopian adventure is currently a console exclusive for the Xbox Series X/S, although it can also be played on Windows PC.
Neon Giant caused a fervor online when they responded to a conversation between two gamers that were discussing the annoying timed-exclusivity deal on recent PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 game Kena: Bridge of Spirits, when one of the pair tagged the development studio and brought up the similar deal on The Ascent.
As you can see above, they responded “Thanks for letting us know you’d like to see The Ascent on PS5! While we don’t have anything to announce right now, we want you to know we hear you and the team are aware of the demand for a PS5 version. Keep an eye right here on our Twitter for updates!”
How likely is The Ascent on PS5?
After that social media interaction, it seems like a PS4 or PS5 version of The Ascent is basically a given. Neon Giant owns The Ascent as an IP, so when the game’s Xbox console exclusivity, Game Pass release and marketing deals have ended and need to be reassessed, there would be very little to get in the way of the game going properly multi-platform.
This would not be too different to Bloober Team’s The Medium, which was a timed Xbox exclusive that came out on PlayStation 5 nine months after it’s original Xbox Series X/S release.
What’s the release date for The Ascent on PS5?
While there’s no official release date at the moment for The Ascent on PS5, we can compare it’s situation to that of fellow Xbox timed-exclusive The Medium. The Medium released on Xbox Series X/S on January 28, 2021 and then came to PlayStation 5 nine months later on September 3, 2021.
Following that logic, The Ascent released on Xbox Series X/S on July 29, 2021. If it is a similar deal, the earliest we could see it would be in April 2022.
Will The Ascent include crossplay on PS5?
One situation that might be more complex is that the game features cross-platform play. Currently Windows PC and Xbox gamers can play the game together, but during the Epic v Apple lawsuit, it was revealed that Sony charges developers a fee for including the feature if they do not meet certain monetary and playtime requirements.
This fee has caused several game developers to include crossplay on all compatible platforms except for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, perhaps most notably, Gearbox with Borderlands 3. If this remains the case, and Neon Giant don’t see crossplay as monetarily viable, then The Ascent on PS5 may end up going without it.
What do you think? Will you play The Ascent on PlayStation 5? Or is not being able to play crossplay with friends that have it on Xbox and Windows PC a deal breaker?
